These hand drawn historical drawings show mechanical schematics for clock and watch (including pocket watches in their early years) components from Westclox, Illinois, USA 1950 – 1960s.

The illustrations are drawn in pencil with notes, dimensions, drawing scale, draughtsman’s signature and date.

Westclox originated in 1885 under the name “United Clock Company” in Illinois, USA.  The company was reorganized following several bankruptcies and mergers and became “Westclox division of General Time Corporation”  in 1936.

The invention of the Westclox “Big Ben” clock, a sleek, iconic model, in 1908, set the template for the 20th century wind-up alarm clock.  The company made over 900,000 Big Ben, and its half-pint cousin the “Baby Ben”, in 1913 alone, with a total clock production (including other clock models) of twice that amount annually. This made Westclox, America’s preferred wake-up call provider.

Westclox also introduced and patented a “drowse” alarm in 1959, which is now more commonly known as a “snooze” function.

Some of the schematics show alarm components such as the “Alarm Escape Wheel” and “Baby Ben” componentry.

The drawings are on waxy translucent tracing type paper which was common for the time as it was found to be more durable and was able to withstand frequent alteration.
